£15k duty spree
22 March 2007
A Chinese man spent a record
23,000 (£15,600) on duty-free alcohol at Paris airport.
The unnamed man shocked staff at the hub when he purchased the carry-on wine and spirits.
Among his buys were an 1806 Cognac, which set him back 5,000 (£3,400) and a 1945 Chateau Mouton Rothschild red wine, which came at a price of 13,800 (£9,400).
Charles de Gaulle airport has begun stocking its duty-free stores with luxury items and has even hired a number of personal shoppers who help the rich and famous with their purchases.
The airport is seeking to benefit from a rebound in the tourist industry which is seeing more people taking to the skies again following a dip in numbers.
However, the extravagance of this unnamed passenger has even surprised those who are there to cater for the rich.
'Most people buy regular wines from Burgundy and so on, but we know this gentleman quite well. He is a collector and an illustrator,' saleswoman Lynda Chong told Reuters.
'He didn't seem terribly surprised at the price. In a quarter of an hour he made his purchases and left.'
