60 years of independence for India
23 March 2007

India is celebrating 60 years of independence in 2007 and to mark the occasion the country is planning a whole host of celebratory events.

A number of festivals will be taking place throughout the year, with April being blessed with Baisakhi, a festival which is dominated by Punjabi drummers.

July sees the Tse-Chu celebrations with Buddhist monks, while the rest of the country will be swinging to its own individual beat at various times during the year.

Tourists in India between March and May will have an increased chance of seeing a Bengal Tiger as the animals come out of the vegetation seeking water.

The Great Himalayan National Park, the Govind Wildlife Sanctuary and the Corbett Tiger Reserve are the most popular tiger-spotting areas.

Between April and September it is possible to arrange private viewing of the Taj Mahal, offering a unique glimpse of the historic buildings.

Travellers are also being offered the chance to explore the Himalayas in the coming months as India opens its doors to everyone to celebrate its 60th year of independence.
