Thailand reopens old airport
23 March 2007

Authorities in Thailand have revealed that they will reopen Bangkok International airport after announcing that is was closed forever back in September.

Known locally as Don Muang airport, the hub was closed after nearly one hundred years of service when a new airport was opened in the capital city.

Suvarnabhumi airport was opened amidst much fanfare but a string of problems and increased passenger numbers have led officials to reopen the old airport.

Both will operate alongside each other although initially, at least, Don Muang will only cater for internal flights.

Suvarnabhumi airport is fast approaching its capacity of 45m passengers having seen 42.8m passing through it last year.

This is one of the reasons behind the opening of Don Muang but problems such as reports of the runways cracking and inadequate facilities have also played a role.

The old airport is due to begin catering from flights again as of 25 March.
