Popular Euro city breaks revealed
26 March 2007
Tourists have been taking more and more city breaks in Europe over the last five years, with smaller destinations seeing the biggest rises, according to new research.
A report from tourism association European Cities Marketing (ECM) shows that some locations like Tallinn in Estonia, Bratislava in Slovakia and Ljubljana in Slovenia are enjoying a dramatic boost in popularity among people seeking a short trip away.
The biggest rises were found to be among the Baltic states, with visitors to Dubrovnik in Croatia doubling in the past five years.
But the top spots were kept by traditional tourist destinations like Barcelona, Berlin, and Prague, which collectively are seeing over half a million extra visitors to their cities a year, according to the report.
"Ease of access and heavy-hitting marketing campaigns have helped these cities to establish their leading position in Europe's city break market," a spokesman for ECM told TravelMole.
City breaks may be getting a boost due to more airlines flying to cities across Europe, which are encouraging more holiday-makers into taking a short trip. The Civil Aviation Authority found in a recent study that nearly three per cent more Britons took a flight to destinations in the UK and overseas last year than in 2005, with the most popular destinations being to Europe.
