Terminal 5 opens in 1yr
27 March 2007
Exactly one year from today (27 March) travellers visiting London and the surrounding area in the UK will be able to pass through the new terminal at Heathrow.
Terminal Five is set to become the leading spot at Heathrow, with British Airways and airport operator BAA saying that it will be capable of handling 30m passengers.
Officials have revealed that 90% of construction work is already complete, with the work remaining within budget.
Trials of the terminal will begin in September this year and these are expected to go on for a further six months, ensuring that any problems can be identified and fixed.
BAA, upon announcing the opening date for the terminal, said that it needed to be built in order to maintain Heathrow's reputation as a world-leading hub.
'68 million passengers will fly through Heathrow this year in aging terminal facilities designed to accommodate around 45 million,' commented Tony Douglas from BAA Heathrow.
'When Terminal Five opens and 30m passengers move out of existing terminals, for the first time we will have space to breath in the central terminal area and have a once in a lifetime opportunity to redevelop the rest of the airport and bring it up to a comparable standard to Terminal Five.'
Mr Douglas went on to say that BAA wants all of Heathrow's facilities to be rebuilt or redeveloped by 2012.
