Stansted extension complete
28 March 2007
UK airport operator BAA has announced that the extension to the security section of Stansted airport has been completed.
Authorities were keen to have the infrastructure in place in time for the busy Easter period so that passengers could move through the improved security zone quickly.
The extension cost £2m to build and includes a number of new x-ray machines, additional metal detectors and entry points to the search area.
All of this goes a long way to getting passengers onto their planes more quickly and means that Stansted can attract more people without causing chaos in the terminal.
'Since 10 August last year, when security measures at all UK airports were greatly increased, we have worked extremely hard to ensure our passengers experience a trouble free journey through the terminal,' said Mark Murphy, customer services director at Stansted.
'In addition to extending the security search area, more than 200 extra security officers have been recruited and by the summer that number will have increased further.
'As with any busy international airport we will undoubtedly have queues at peak times, but if passengers follow some simple rules then queuing times will be kept to a minimum,' he added.
Officials at Stansted are also working to improve queuing times by doing as much as they can to inform passengers of any restrictions or requirements that are in place regarding luggage.
