Cypriot airport officials defend charges
28 March 2007

Officials at Hermes airport in Cyprus have defended their decision to impose charges for passengers passing through the hub.

Hoteliers, travel agents and airlines are furious that the extra charges are being levied but the airport's chairman said that it was always well known that they would be introduced.

Nicos Shacolas revealed that only government intervention had stopped the charges being brought in back in May 2006, reports Cyprus Mail.

Passengers can expect the charges to affect them from 1 April onwards, with further increases likely to be introduced in July and November.

By the end of the year, passengers will be paying an additional £18, generating around £12.5m for the airport.

Mr Shacolas has defended the move by stating that the airport has spent £8.5m on improvements and that the charges are inline with neighbouring hubs.
