Nearly nine million Britons have chosen to ditch partners, friends and relatives of the opposite sex over the last 12 months and take a break with members of the same sex.

Over two-thirds more Britons opt for single-sex holidays today than would have done so five years ago, the research from Halifax Travel Insurance revealed.

Over a quarter of men have taken a lads-only break, compared to almost one in five women, as the classic stag night mutates into the European city-break stag weekend, powered by cheap flights and cheap beer in one of the continent's brewing hotspots, Prague particularly.

Meanwhile, sporting events of the last 12 months, not least the World Cup in Germany, attracted hordes of lads whose very own WAGS preferred, in many cases, to hold the home fort.

But while one in four trips were stag or hen nights, 36% of people went away just to catch up properly with friends.

Meanwhile, the 3% unlucky in love holidayed with same-sex only friends to recover from the heartache of a recent break-up.
