Brits abroad hit record levels
11 April 2007

Britons are more cosmopolitan than ever as record numbers of holidaymakers opt for exotic destinations over the classic caravan in Cornwall, figures from the Office of National Statistics have confirmed.

The number of overseas trips taken from in Britain in 2005 were three times as high as in 1981, at 66.4 million in total.

And more than eight in ten of those holidaymakers were whisked off to their chosen location by plane an increase from just six in ten people 25 years earlier.

The top locations for ambitious air travellers were Spain and the US, although Ireland, despite begin much closer to home, pulled in at third place.

Boarding the high seas meanwhile plummeted in popularity, with just 12 per cent of people now accessing their getaways by boat compared to 41 per cent in 1981.

Nevertheless, exploring the delights of our own island has not quite lost its charm 85 million holidays were taken in the UK itself in 2005, with the largest number of holidaymakers choosing the south-western region, which offers outstanding sun and surf in the summer months.
