Flights arriving at and departing from the two main airports in Paris, Orly and Charles de Gaulle, were affected by strike action by the country's CGT and CFDT unions on Thursday.

Strike action was called after workers were told air traffic control operations for the Paris region would be centralised at a single site separate from the airports, scaling down the number of employees who would be needed for the roles at the airports.

Several short and medium-haul Air France flights from Orly airport were cancelled after strike action was confirmed by Aeroports de Paris, the continental equivalent to BAA.

But the majority of affected flights were internal regional flights linking Paris up with towns and cities scattered across France, national carrier Air France emphasised.

Air France spokespeople stressed that the airline was taking all possible measures to help passengers reach their destinations on time.

Once in Paris, eager peddlers could consider taking to their bikes to reach their final destination, since the tourist office recently announced the opening of a series of new cycle tracks in the beautiful Loire Valley and Burgundy regions.
