Culture vultures flock to Guadalajara
12 April 2007

Culture-hungry visitors to Mexico in May have a feast in store in the shape of the May Cultural Festival, which commandeers lifestyles and nighttimes across the town of Guadalajara for four weeks.

From early May to the start of June, the festival's array of cultural events, including concerts, theatre, opera and cinema lures visitors with its sheer concentration of global talent.

With each year's past offerings themed around a country which has transformed the face of the arts, featuring works from Hungary, Poland, Austria and Spain, it is perhaps fitting that in its tenth year, the focus of the festival is Mexican art and creativity.

The majority of the performances, including the indigenous opera Ildegonda and Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet under Mexican direction, take place in the Teatro Degollado and the Instituto Cultural Cabanas.

And travellers keen to see more of Mexico will witness the juxtaposition of cultural ingenuity with natural beauty when they venture outside the regional capital of Guadalajara to see the best that has been written and sketched in the series of performances and exhibitions scattered across the 12 regions of Jalisco state for the festival.
