Brussels Airport standstill after firefighters' strike
13 April 2007
The majority of flights between Brussels and other European and UK destinations have been suspended after fire and security staff went on strike this morning.
According to union spokespeople, the action stems from widespread dissatisfaction with management, in part because of its policy on meal vouchers, premiums and promotions for workers.
Brussels Airlines spokesperson Geert Sciot apparently told the local VRT television channel that it would delay all its flights to enable staff to address safety concerns, although he later said that all flights were now cancelled, Luchtzak reported.
'It is irresponsible to take off and land without safety personnel. Safety is our priority', he said.
Mr Sciot added that he expected the delays to have a knock-on effect over the weekend, when many holidaymakers will be returning from Easter breaks.
Nevertheless, with negotiations under way, airport authorities remained optimistic that the strikers' grievances would be resolved soon and normal operations resumed.
