Increased capacity for Spanish Grand Prix
13 April 2007
Spain is preparing to host the fourth leg of the Formula One Grand Prix at the Circuit de Catalunya just outside Barcelona in mid-May.
The Formula One season, held around the world, incorporates 17 races and spans four continents.
Beginning in Australia, the season concludes with the finale in Brazil, touching down in Monaco for the race on the roads of Monte Carlo.
The Spanish Bellpuig track is highly rated by experts, at a quick 1,600 metres, with multiple corners as drivers curl upwards around a steep central slope.
Racers are compelled to keep their wits about them as they negotiate some of the Grand Prix's most challenging jumps too.
Two thousand of this year's spectators will be lodged in the new grandstand completed this month in preparation for the event, but the total capacity on all the circuit's stands is 76,700.
The Catalunya region, otherwise famed for its architecture, including Gaudi's Sagrada Familia, Casa Mila and Parc Guell, is a popular racing site the year round, particularly for off-road events.
