A safety first for aviation industry
18 April 2007

Travellers who took to the skies during 2006 were safer than fliers from any other year.

According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), 2006 was the safest year on record for air travel.

The organisation's annual Safety Report highlighted a 14% reduction in accidents compared to 2005 for Western-built jets.

'The safety results for 2006 are impressive,' commented Giovanni Bisignani, director general of the IATA.

'Air transport remains the safest form of travel. But we must do even better. The goal will always be zero accidents.'

The figures are good news for holidaymakers and frequent flyers and the fact that the IATA is not satisfied even with these record results will fill many people with confidence about flying.
