Gap year advice
25 April 2007
Students across Europe will soon be considering taking a gap year after completing their exams and many parents will be concerned for their safety.
In recognition of this, ACE Traveller insurance, personal security experts red24 and gap safety specialists Objective Travel Safety have come together to compile a top ten list of safety tips.
The number one piece of advice is for travellers to plan their trip well in advance, taking into account any political factors and cultural differences that they should be aware of.
It is also advised that as little as possible is taken on the trip, with a recommended rucksack size of 80 litres.
Travellers are also advised to keep a fairly low profile while away, trying to avoid being the loudest person on the beach, yet keeping an air of confidence.
Giving out details of where you are staying is something that should be avoided, as is showing off items such as cameras and mobile phones.
One of the most fundamental pieces of advice is for travellers to never carry something across a border for someone else and, finally, all travellers should take out insurance.
