New Maori village in New Zealand
27 April 2007

A new Maori heritage village is opening on the outskirts of Christchurch in New Zealand.

The village is designed to recreate traditional Maori settlements of years gone by and it is hoped that tourists will flock to the region to get a taste of how things were.

'We're totally re-enacting a portion of our history,' Mike Tamaki told TVNV. 'It's about the coming together of two cultures.'

The introduction of the village close to Christchurch is being labelled as significant because these kinds of projects are generally housed in Rotorua.

However, it is expected that the new site will be hugely popular and is proximity to Christchurch will be a big bonus.

The village, which is 25-hectares in size, has cost in the region of £2.5m to build but this was not a concern for Mr Tamaki who said that the village is about more than making money.

'I don't think you can really develop something without having a passion that's going to take you beyond the dollar sign,' he said.
