Tourists visiting the city of Dubbo in New South Wales will be treated to the site of thousands of elderly people attempting to break a world record.

Around 1,300 people have been invited to the event, with the aim of creating the world's longest ever conga line made up entirely of pensioners.

The stunt is being arranged to celebrate the 18th anniversary of the opening of the Dubbo Osteoporosis Epidemiology Study.

So far, at least 650 people are expected to turn up for the record attempt and organisers hope that the centre's profile will be raised and government funding secured by the event.

'We've had 650 acceptances and as far as I know the record hasn't been set, we are setting the record so if we can get 600... elderly people in this conga line, it's going to be a big record for somebody to beat,' a nurse, named only as Janet, told ABC News Online.

Those behind the record attempt say that the music has been chosen and a number of T-shirts have been printed ahead of the conga which takes place on May 2nd.
