Prince Edward in California
14 May 2007

Prince Edward has been enjoying a trip to the US and even managed to meet a legend of the silver screen.

The British royal was officially in the states to hand out Duke of Edinburgh awards in the country.

It is the first time that the awards have been given out in the US and Edward was joined by California state governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The pair appeared to get on famously, chatting freely between handing out the awards to children at a Californian school.

In order to mark the visit of Prince Edward, a tree has been planted in the school's grounds.

The Duke of Edinburgh awards have been around for over 50 years when Edward's father, Prince Philip, came up with the idea.

Since then, over 5m young people in 110 countries have completed the awards, although America has never adopted the idea.

Now it has, the awards will be named the Duke of Edinburgh Young Americans Challenge.
