Tourists enjoying a trip to Scotland who want to find somewhere to have a nice bite to eat are spoilt for choice.

However, to make things that little bit easier when it comes to selecting a restaurant, tourism authority VisitScotland has handed out some top awards to the eateries that stand out above the rest.

The EastScotland Gold Award is the highest honour in the national restaurant award scheme and aims to reward high standards of cuisine, service and overall experience.

A number of restaurants have been handed the awards and VisitScotland hopes that by introducing them, the standard of food and food outlet in the country will continue to grow.

'The awards mark out our most innovative and quality driven establishments providing the recognition they deserve, be they the local tea room or internationally recognised restaurant,' said Peter Lederer, chairman of VisitScotland.

'At the same time we hope the awards will provide an incentive across the industry to strive to improve visitors' experiences in Scotland.'

Airds hotel and restaurant in Argyll, Andrew Fairlie at Gleneagles, Castleton House hotel in Angus, Michael Caines restaurant in Glasgow, Martin Wishart in Edinburgh and The Three Chimneys on the Isle of Skye were all handed a Gold Award.
