6 of the best in Kansas
17 May 2007
A list of the 100 best small-town getaways in the American Midwest has highlighted six regions in Kansas.
The highest ranking town in the state was Lindsborg, which was ranked 19th and praised for being a little Sweden and having a strong arts scene.
The list of towns was compiled by Midwest Living magazine and the 100 were short listed from a possible 8,500 towns.
In order to appear on the list, the towns had to have a population of less than 20,000 and each was judged on a number of things.
Among these were attractions, vibe, scenery, walkability, shopping, dining, lodging, arts scene, outdoor activities, proximity to major cities and multiday potential.
In addition, there was a wildcard section which allowed for anything like a festival or mass gathering.
Aside from Lindsborg, Atchison, beside the Missouri River, was ranked 29th, while Abilene came 40th.
Cottonwood Falls came in at number 51, with the magazine praising its high-end lodging and dining.
Fort Scott was ranked 67th and Council Grove came 84th.
