Holidaymakers getting more active
18 May 2007

More and more people are turning to the internet to book their holiday and the focus is shifting towards active trips.

The days of booking a package holiday to sit in the sun for two weeks appear to be declining as a new generation of holidaymakers book themselves in for trips that include activities to get the blood pumping.

Research by Travelzest and the Centre of Future Studies (CFS) has highlighted the way in which people have moved away from sitting on the beach for two weeks, with the number package holiday bookings falling by 8.9 per cent in the last four years.

Now, holidaymakers are much more likely to put themselves down for some skydiving, a spot of salsa dancing or maybe even a bungee jump.

'People are spending more money than ever before on life-enriching experiences, such as luxury 'small indulgencies' and travel trends reflect this,' said Dr Frank Shaw from the CFS.

'We are seeing much more sophisticated and confident travellers who care about the world around them and want authentic travel experiences.'

According to the research, the kinds of holiday that are growing in popularity include activity breaks, spa holidays, wildlife trips and hobby-base holidays.
