Airport prepares for football fan rush
18 May 2007
Preparations are being put in place at Liverpool John Lennon airport as the hub prepares to receive an influx of thousands of passengers.
Staff at the airport are gearing up for Monday 21 May when a mad rush is likely to begin with fans of Liverpool FC making the trip to Athens for the Uefa Champions League final.
In total, around 13,000 fans are expected to make the journey and John Lennon airport is to handle an additional 57 charter flights.
The rush is not expected to subside until after the morning of Wednesday 23 May when fans will be getting onto the last flights to the match.
Management at the airport are bringing in additional staff to cope with the increase in passenger numbers and other measures are being taken too.
However, fans are being warned that normal security measures are in place, meaning no liquids are to be taken onto the flights.
'This operation is of course bigger than ever and will bring even greater challenges,' said Andy Gower, airport director.
'We are confident however that forward planning and the attention to detail that is currently being considered will pay off.
'Once again we will be asking that fans allow plenty of time for their journey through the airport and are patient and co-operative during what will be the busiest time in the airport's history,' he added.
