China becoming top tourist destination
21 May 2007

China is fast becoming one of the world's leading tourist destinations, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).

The body predicts that China will become the third most popular destination in the world from next year, overtaking the United States, reports China Daily.

France, Spain and the US currently top the table of holidaymakers' favourite places to visit but China is growing in popularity.

The UNWTO says that 29% of tourists heading to Asia and the Pacific last year visited China, while the country accounted for 5.8% of global tourism during the year.

'I am confident China will overtake the US next year,' revealed Xu Jing, regional representative for Asia and the Pacific of the UNWTO.

In addition, Mr Jing predicted that the country would become the world's number one tourist destination by 2020.

China is home to a diverse range of cultural treats and contains many sites which highlight the country's ancient cultural past.
