Viagra stands up to jet lag
23 May 2007

Jet lag following a long-haul flight may become a thing of the past with the help of male impotence drug Viagra.

Researchers in Argentina tested the drug on hamsters that were given the symptoms of jet lag by having the lights turned on and off at irregular times, reports Reuters.

Adult males were given a dosage at night before bright lights were switched on six hours earlier than normal, simulating an eastbound flight.

The hamsters that were given Viagra appeared to recover from their jet lag 50% quicker than those that had not.

The researchers judged recovery by when the hamsters began using their exercise wheels.

It is now hoped that the drug could be used to help travellers combat jet lag, although it only seems to have an effect on eastbound flights and not on westbound ones.

Experts say that only a small dosage of Viagra would have to be used to combat jet lag when compared to the dosage administered to beat erectile dysfunction.
