Chaos for fans ahead of Champions League final
23 May 2007

Many football fans hoping to make it to the Uefa Champions League final in Athens on May 23rd have had their plans scuppered in a day of flight chaos.

The match between Liverpool and AC Milan has been hotly anticipated for some time but industrial action in Italy and a faulty plane in England have meant that many people have missed out.

Hundreds of flights in and out of Italy were cancelled due to two simultaneous eight-hour strikes by air traffic controllers and cabin crew from a leading Italian airline.

Officials have been warning of significant public disorder in reaction to the cancellations as desperate fans try to get to the Greek capital for the final of the biggest club competition in the world.

In the UK, a number of Liverpool fans were prevented from making it to the final when the last flight to Athens that would have landed before kick off was cancelled.

A technical problem with the plane meant that it could not take off from Liverpool John Lennon airport.
