Qatar in Airbus deal
31 May 2007

Qatar Airways has agreed to buy 80 A350 aircraft from Airbus.

The airline has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the European plane-maker and it is welcome news for Airbus.

Recently, more and more airlines have been opting to snub Airbus and purchase aeroplanes from Boeing, with the new 787 Dreamliner proving to be a popular choice.

Until Qatar put itself down for the 80-craft order, the A350 had just 13 firm orders, while the Dreamliner already had 584.

Airbus has been forced into making a number of changes to the A350 following customer dissatisfaction with some design aspects.

This led to many carriers preferring to buy the Dreamliner but Airbus is confident that recent changes will lead to a surge in orders.

The agreement between Qatar and Airbus was signed in Paris on 30 May at the Elysee Palace, with the airline's chief executive officer Akbar Al Baker, Airbus president Louis Gallois, the Emir of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and newly-elected French president Nicolas Sarkozy all present.
