Ancient Turkish tree is tourist attraction
05 June 2007

An ancient tree in Turkey is proving to be a popular tourist attraction among foreign visitors.

The Monument Tree in Alanozu's Guneysinir City is said to be at least 2,000 years old, with some experts predicting that it is older than that.

It has three main trunks and takes 11 people standing hand-to-hand to completely encircle it.

In addition, it has been found that the tree's roots stretch up to 800 metres away, with some residents accidentally damaging them because they have appeared in their gardens.

'This root damage has caused several of the tree's branches to die, but the whole remains healthy,' mayor of Alanozu Ali Turedi told Today's Zaman.

Mr Turedi pointed out that the tree is known throughout the world and has managed to survive a number of droughts as well as the effects of global warming.
