Hong Kong promotes green side
06 June 2007
Perhaps most famous for huge buildings, bright lights and bustling streets, Hong Kong is attempting to highlight its green credentials.
Officials in the province want to alter slightly the image that many tourists have of it and they are starting by advertising the green spaces that are on offer.
Around 40% of Hong Kong's land mass is taken up by parks and nature reserves, but these are usually ignored, with visitors preferring to visit the more cosmopolitan areas.
Now a number of environmental and nature tours are popping up, as officials try to attract environmental tourists.
The Hong Kong Nature Kaleidoscope programme has been established to offer foreign visitors the opportunity to see such natural delights as the Hong Kong Wetland Park and the incredible surroundings of Tai O More.
'Most likely, in the eyes of the tourist, Hong Kong is just a shopping paradise. They don't know that Hong Kong has her unique culture and ecological aspect,' tour guide Frederick Chan told Reuters.
