Planes diverted for exams
08 June 2007

Aircraft taking off from Huangshan airport in China are to be diverted for two days to allow students at a nearby school to take their exams in peace.

The school in Anhui province lies very close to the airport and the noise of planes taking off is clearly audible from inside, reports Xinhua news agency.

Children in the region and across the country will soon be sitting their university entrance exams and parents had become concerned that noise from the aircraft would disturb their children.

Spaces at universities are very limited, with 9.5m students competing for 5.67 available places.

The exams are generally seen as a student's final opportunity to make it into a university and parents lobbied the local education department and airport officials to do something about the noise.

After much wrangling, it was decided that flights to and from the hub would be diverted slightly so that they do not pass directly over the school.
