Slovakian parks project
11 June 2007

Tourists taking a holiday in Slovakia may soon have to pay to visit the country's national parks and protected areas.

Officials in the country say that they are considering the plans but are not even close to an agreement yet.

The idea would be to pump the money made from fees back into the parks and in particular protected areas to help maintain them.

'We are dealing with introducing fees for protected areas; it's a way to raise money for their maintenance and better protection,' revealed Jaroslav Jadus, the environment ministry's state secretary.

'It's still too early to talk about dates or specific areas,' he told the Pravda daily newspaper.

Speculation is rife that the Tatras National Park will be the first to introduce fees.

Tatras is the oldest national park in Slovakia and is situated in the Tatra mountains. It is famous throughout the world for its breathtaking scenery and contains more than 100 mountain lakes.
