BA looks at A380
11 June 2007

British Airways is looking to the future and renewing its fleet of long-haul aircraft.

The carrier says that it needs to begin replacing its planes after 2010 and is considering taking on one of the new Airbus A380 superjumbos.

Chief executive officer at British Airways, Willie Walsh, told Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore that the new aircraft would suit some of its routes.

'It could be suitable for the London-Hong Kong route or for South Africa," he said.

Despite this, Mr Walsh went on to point out that British Airways would also be ordering a number of other planes.

With 34 jets needing to be updated, he hinted that the company would look at taking on 20 new Boeing 747-400s and 14 Boeing 767s.

'Choosing a single type does not meet our needs, we could buy two or three different models. A decision will be taken in September,' said Mr Walsh.

If British Airways does place an order, it will join 15 other carriers who have placed orders including Lufthansa, Air France and Virgin Atlantic.
