Nepal a 'popular tourism destination'
13 June 2007
Nepal is becoming an increasingly popular tourist spot for adventure-hungry Brits, a new survey has revealed.
According to research by the Immigration Office at the country's Tribhuvan International Airport, the number of passengers flying into Nepal for a holiday was on the up last month.
Figures show that 27,759 tourists flew into the airport over the course of May - a 49.6% rise on the same month last year.
British people appear to be particularly taken by the delights the destination has to offer, with arrivals from the UK rising by 86.3%.
The rise in popularity of the Himalayan nation is said to be its newly-found peaceful status and activities on offer to adventurous foreigners such as mountaineering, trekking, white-water rafting, kayaking, canyoneering, bungee jumping and paragliding.
'The last five months have shown encouraging signs of growth in the tourism sector,' said Aditya Baral, a spokesman for Nepal's tourism board.
'We are expecting record numbers of tourist arrivals this year if the current trend continues.'
