76% more travellers 'environmentally aware'
13 June 2007

British holidaymakers are becoming more environmentally-friendly with 34% claiming they would pay more to cut down on carbon emissions while travelling.

According to a new survey conducted by marketing firm emedia, 76% more people think about the effect their holiday will have on the environment compared to this time last year.

Managing director at the internet firm David Clark described the results as 'staggering', adding that the most popular way for people to try to protect the environment when travelling was offsetting emissions.

Other green practices being taken up by passengers include using alternative transport and not travelling so far away.

The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) is now calling on more information to be made available to holidaymakers about what they can do to reduce the impact they have on the environment.

Keith Richards, head of consumer affairs at the ABTA, said: 'Consumers can only make informed decisions if they have clear information about the impact of what they do, good or bad.'
