Head to Barbados for Crop Over
13 June 2007
British holidaymakers who are planning their trips abroad are being advised to consider heading to Barbados for the island's annual Crop Over Festival.
Having been held each year since the 1780s, the mammoth event sees thousands join in the street parties and watch the main parade.
The name comes from what would have been the end of the sugar cane season when everyone would celebrate another successful harvest.
Today, tourists can enjoy the cart parade, where stunningly decorated carts are pulled though the main street, while the Bridgetown Market, held from 4 August to 6 August, gives visitors the opportunity to splash out on some traditional handicrafts and art to the sounds of calypso music.
Children are also invited to join in the fun and can get involved in the Kiddies Kadooment competition where they can dress in beautiful costumes and parade before the judges.
The jubilations continue throughout the summer from the end of June to early August concluding Kadooment Day - a public holiday - when costumed bands entertain the crowds with calypso rhythms and spectators can enjoy a fireworks display.
