Rome - Ancient tourist site damaged
14 June 2007

A world-famous tourist attraction in Rome has been slightly damaged by a drunk-driver.

The unnamed man from Colombia appeared to be attempting to recreate a scene from 1970s movie the Italian Job.

He drove his car down the 138 Spanish steps, as they do in the film, but he was clearly a little less skilled at the job.

Police found the 24-year-old slumped at the wheel of his car at the bottom of the 18th-century steps.

When they woke him, he was forced to take a breathalyser test and found to be twice the legal drink-drive limit.

"It was like something out of The Italian Job," said an eyewitness. "This car was coming down the steps at quite a speed but the driver didn't lose control.

"People were diving out of the way and when he got to the bottom he just stopped and stayed there."

Although the driver was unhurt, some of the 200-year-old steps were damaged and chipped.
