No more nudes on Costa Blanca
14 June 2007

Topless sunbathing on the Costa Blanca could soon become a thing of the past.

Local residents are apparently putting pressure on officials to outlaw the practice which they say is not family friendly.

A petition of 10,000 signatures has been put together, calling for it to be made illegal for women to sunbathe topless or to wear skimpy bikini bottoms or thongs.

Those behind the petition, the Family Beaches group, are calling for action to be taken and claim that their request is merely for a little more 'respect'.

'As things stand at the moment, children are having to see things they are yet to be taught by their families,' president of the group Maribel Martinez told the Metro.

'Many of our supporters are young people. We have already got nudist beaches and beaches where smoking is banned.

'Why can't we set aside beach areas for the enjoyment of families?' she added.

The Costa Blanca is home to such popular resorts as Benidorm and Javea.
