Indian airport chaos
14 June 2007

Holidaymakers travelling to and from India have been experiencing severe difficulties following a nationwide strike.

Employees of Indian, formerly known as Indian Airlines, have been staging a strike for three days, effectively bringing internal air travel to a standstill in the country.

The airline mainly operates internally but foreign tourists have had to endure severe disruption to connecting flights and busier than usual airports.

Hundreds of flights have been grounded and tens-of-thousands of passengers stranded as a result of a dispute over pay.

Workers want their wages to increase in light of a boom in the aviation industry in India.

Talks between unions and bosses collapsed and led to the strike, with employees maintaining that they will continue with the industrial action despite threats of suspension.

'This can't scare us,' J.K. Badola, general-secretary of the Air Corporation Employees Union, told Reuters. '12,000 employees are ready to face suspension.'

It is unclear when the strike action will come to an end but people travelling to or from India are advised to contact their airline first.
