International music festival in Alsace

The French region of Alsace is hosting an international music festival to celebrate the work of Charles Munch.

The 2007 International Music Festival of Colmar celebrates one of France's most important 20th century composers and is expected to attract many, many visitors.

A total of 23 concerts will be held as part of the festival and it is the 19th such event to take place.

Munch was born in Alsace in 1891 and founded the Orchestre de Paris in 1967 - one year before he passed away.

The festival will feature performances from the likes of the National Philharmonic of Russia, the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, the Moscow Academy of Choral Art, Russian pianist Grigory Sokolov and many more.

The grand finale to the event will be a special recital by Mr Sokolov in the breathtaking Saint Matthieu's Church.

Anyone wishing to attend the festival will need to get to Alsace for 3 July, with the festivities ending on 15 July.
