Paris gears up for Bastille Day party
21 June 2007

France is gearing up for one its most important celebrations as Bastille Day approaches.

The day itself is a celebration of the Bastille prison being stormed and the French Revolution beginning.

In modern times, the day is marked with wild celebrations across the nation and Paris in particular comes to life.

Locals describe it as a 36-hour party, with a whole host of parades, street parties and fireworks displays as Paris throws off the shackles and goes crazy for a while.

The majority of events that are held on Bastille Day are free and there is so much to do that it is impossible to see everything in one visit.

The official celebrations are marked with a military parade along the Champs-Elysees but other public events tend to attract most of the attention.

Just to highlight how much of a party the day is, every fire station in Paris hosts a large party on the eve of the Bastille Day, with revellers dancing in the street well into the following morning.

Bastille Day is celebrated on 14 July.
