Big Boeing order for Air France-KLM
22 June 2007

Air France and KLM have announced that they have placed orders for 16 Boeing aircraft.

The airlines, which operate under the Air France-KLM group, have ordered nine Boeing 777-300ERs and seven Next-Generation Boeing 737-700s.

The £1.35 billion purchase is the first the group has made as a joint venture, with the Next Generation 737-700s going to KLM.

Bosses at the Dutch airline say that the new aircraft will replace existing Boeing 737 Classics and the firm has an option to buy another seven in the future.

'KLM is enhancing its competitive position in Europe by making the Boeing 737 Next-Generation the backbone of our short-haul fleet,' said Peter Hartman, president and chief executive officer of KLM.

'The 737-800 and 737-900 have proven to be highly efficient and reliable. We look forward to incorporating its sister, the 737-700, into our fleet.'

Air France's acquisition of nine 777-300ERs brings its total unfulfilled orders of the jet up to 14 and the new aircraft will be added to its 46-strong fleet of 777s.
