Large Chilean lake disappears
22 June 2007
Anyone wishing to take a holiday in Chile in order to see a lake situated in the Magallanes region in Patagonia may be disappointed.
Scientists have been left perplexed by the sudden disappearance of the body of water that stretched over ten to 12 acres.
The lake was fed by melting glaciers but has vanished from the face of the earth within a matter of months.
'In March we patrolled the area and everything was normal... we went again in May and to our surprise we found the lake had completely disappeared,' Juan Jose Romero, regional director of Chile's National Forestry Corporation CONAF told Reuters.
'The only things left were chunks of ice on the dry lake-bed and an enormous fissure.'
A full investigation has been launched into the bizarre disappearance but one theory is currently taking prominence.
Some experts believe that the lake has been swallowed into the ground following a tremor.
The theory goes that the tremor opened up a crack in the ground and the water has drained away into it.
