Nijmegan hosts International Four Day March
26 June 2007

Thousands of people will soon be descending upon the Dutch city of Nijmegen for the world's largest walking event, the International Four Days March.

Nearly 50,000 participants will take part in walks of 30, 40 and 50 kilometres each day for four days between 17 to 20 July, in an effort to promote sport and exercise. Upon completing the event, participants will receive a royally approved medal, called the Vierdaagsekruis.

First organised in 1909, the march was designed to keep the Dutch military fit after the advent of the motorcar. Although several thousand army personnel still take place in the event, it has become an overwhelmingly civilian affair, attracting walkers and hikers from around the world.

Nijmegan is considered to be the oldest city in the Netherlands and celebrated its 2000th year of existence in 2005. The International Four Days March was not held last year because of an extreme heat wave, but it promises to be the biggest and best yet for those wishing to take part in 2007.
