France prepares for Festival d'Avignon
27 June 2007
Artists and performers around the world are preparing for this year's Festival d'Avignon, France's largest celebration of culture, which will be hosted between 6 and 27 July.
The festival has run in the former Papal capital of Avignon every year since 1946. Starting as a modest and local gathering, it has since expanded into an event of international significance.
France's equivalent to the Scottish Edinburgh Festival, the Festival d'Avignon is a multi-arts celebration comprising of two celebrations. The 'In' festival acts as a forum for the expression of theatrical classics, dance, music and opera by some of the most famous directors and companies in the world.
Meanwhile, the 'Off' festival allows anyone to take to the stage and features cutting edge comedy, drama and musical performances, much like the Edinburgh Fringe festival.
A selection of the country's best wine, food and weather go hand in hand with the culture against the fantastic backdrop of the historic city of Avignon, in the heart of France's Provence region.
