Sydney Opera House wins World Heritage status

Sydney's iconic Opera House has achieved Unesco World Heritage status this week, elevating the renowned performing arts venue into the pantheon of greatest human architectural achievements.
Sydney Opera House is the city's most recognisable landmark and one of Australia's largest tourist attractions, bringing in over 4.5 million visitors every year.
It was one of several sites of significance recently chosen by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) to receive World Heritage status, along with India's 16th century Red Fort Complex and the Iwami Ginzan silver mine of Honshu Island in Japan.
Australian prime minister John Howard said he was delighted with the news: 'The Sydney Opera House, as an outstanding example of 20th century architecture, is a testament to the daring of architect Jorn Utzon and those who brought about his vision.
'It is also, of course, testament to the openness of the people of Sydney and Australia, and an enduring legacy for our place in the world.'
