Los Angeles defies gravity at Summer X-Games
05 July 2007
The annual Summer X-Games, a coming together of more than 300 of the world's best alternative sports athletes, will take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, from 2 to 5 August.
Competitors will defy gravity and test their skills with a series of jumps slides and spins as they compete in a variety of sports for a share of the $1m (£495,000) prize money.
Skateboarding will feature unique events in categories including 'Street', 'Vert' and 'Luge'. The Street event pits contestants against stairs, handrails and banks, while Vert sees athletes skating on a on a large halfpipe for singles and doubles honours. Luge is the final event, where racers have to navigate modified skateboards downhill at death-defying speeds.
BMX competitors will be all tested in Vert and Street categories, as well as 'Flatland' and 'Dirt Jump'. The Flatland discipline requires great skill and concentration, as cyclists perform tricks on and around their bike without the aid of ramps and rails. The Dirt Jump, meanwhile, entails riders launching themselves from Motocross-style jumps and performing spins and flips in the air.
Other sports at the Summer X-Games include Sport Climbing, Moto X, Wakeboarding among many others.
