Seven new wonders revealed
10 July 2007

The New 7 Wonders of the World were announced this weekend, during an official declaration ceremony in Lisbon, Portugal, held on 7 July (07.07.07).

China's Great Wall, Petra in Jordan, the statue of Christ Redeemer in Brazil, Machu Picchu in Peru, Chichen Itza in Mexico, the Roman Coliseum in Italy and the Taj Mahal in India were revealed as the new wonders.

The original Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, which were compiled by Philon of Byzantium in 200 BC. Of those, only the Pyramids of Giza, in Egypt, remain.

In a bid to create a new and more relevant list, the New7Wonders organisation allowed people around the world to vote online, by telephone and text message for their favourite man-made wonders, from a shortlist of 21.

The Acropolis in Greece, the Angkor in Cambodia, the Eiffel Tower in France, the Kremlin in Russia and, indeed, the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt all were among those shortlisted.
