Buenos Aires under first snowfall since 1918
10 July 2007

Thousands of Argentines danced in the streets of Buenos Aires on Monday, as the capital witnessed its first major snowfall since 1918.

Wet snow fell for several hours blanketing the city in a thin white layer after cold air from the Antarctic collided with the low pressure system that hung over western and central Argentina.

The country's National Weather Service said it was the first major snowfall since 22 June, 1918, although sleet and freezing rain have been occasionally reported.

The snow fell on Argentina's Independence Day holiday, adding a certain charm to the festivities being staged in the capital city.

'This is the kind of weather phenomenon that comes along every 100 years,' said weather forecaster Hector Ciappesoni to La Nacion newspaper. 'It is very difficult to predict.'
