Prom season kicks off in London
10 July 2007
Founded by Sir Henry Wood in 1895, London's Proms are viewed by many people as the greatest celebration of classical music in the world.
Now in its 113th year, the series of concerts, held at the Royal Albert Hall in the UK's capital city, will this year celebrate Elgar's 150th anniversary and Auden's centenary as well as various notable death anniversaries.
Over eight weeks, the BBC will promote more than 70 concerts, covering a vast range of sounds, including semi-staged operas, early and contemporary music, chamber orchestras, choral concerts and world music, as well as a healthy dose of symphony orchestra concerts.
Experienced by more than 5,000 people each night, the Proms are a magical series of musical concerts through which the world's greatest soloists and ensembles celebrate hundreds of years of classical music heritage.
The first concert starts this week on 13 July and the festival will carry on through until 8 September.
