Fireworks over the Rhine
11 July 2007

At different points along the River Rhine, magnificent fireworks displays are held throughout the year, making up the Rhine in Flames festival.

On 11 August, between Spay and Koblenz, to the south of Bonn, Europe's largest procession of ships will be accompanied by eight fireworks displays lasting more than one and a half hours along ten miles of decorated promenades.

The pyrotechnical spectacle lights up the sky over the picturesque towns that line the banks of the Rhine. Bengal fire (blue flares) illuminate the edges of the river, as spectators watch on from the bank-side or from boats offering tourists prime viewing locations.

Still to come on this year's itinerary, The Night of a Thousand Fires (8 September) around Oberwesel in the heart of the Rhine Gorge will see 40 ships bathed in the glow of accompanying gunpowder displays which follow the rhythm of the music. A week later,

The Loreley Night (15 September) will provide a romantic river tour between the towns of St Goar and St Goarshausan, as crowds enjoy a selection of the finest local wines and specialities.
