Locarno International Film Festival dazzles Switzerland
12 July 2007

Lauded by Variety magazine as one of the most important film festivals in the world, the Locarno International Film Festival is Switzerland's reply to the Venice Festival and is just as old.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the festival, which is the second oldest in the world after Venice, and has become one of the biggest European film events in recent times.

Along with open-air screenings in the Swiss town of Locarno's Piazza Grande, the festival also includes an international competition with a strong focus on documentary film making and new directors.

The competition line-up tends to be made up of either first or second films, or innovative films by established directors who have not yet gained international repute. It is the best place to see tomorrow's best film makers today.

The festival draws in about 150,000 viewers from 1 to 11 August, as well as large number of buyers and sales agents, validating the important position that this festival has assumed in the world of film.
